Part 1.

Introduction.

It is fitting that we take this opportunity to reflect on the circumstances leading  to the Great Die Off, and in particular on the processes through which the race gradually recovered its balance.  After centuries of stability and  peace,  it is important to remember that it has not always  been this way.  What we take for granted today was once beyond imagining.  A thousand years ago we were still in the era of wars.  World population had grown far beyond any possibility of  sustainability.  Natural resources were being used up heedlessly.  The looming catastrophe was clear to many, but a willful ignorance prevailed.  The race marched on into the maelstrom.

But even then, as the disaster began to unfold with water wars and famines, signs of the ultimate solution were present.  No government saw this.  No statesman came forward to  champion the  changes that were essential.  Nobody understood what was happening directly before their eyes.  But Gaia knew.  And She was already taking steps.

Population.

A thousand years ago world population was 6 billion.  It was projected it would be 9 billion within a hundred years.  And already resources were getting scarce.  The cause was obvious: unbridled unsafe sex.  That is, man/woman sex deliberately for the purpose of creating children.  Suicidal though it obviously was, no one condemned it.  On the contrary, as difficult as it is for us to believe today, M/W sex was universally encouraged -- by all religions, in all lands.  Irrespective of this, some chose M/M or W/W sex.  And it was these people who were condemned, not the irresponsible breeders!  Laws were actually passed to make safe and sane same sex sex (S5) illegal!   And here is one of the clear signs that nobody recognized.  When asked why they chose deviant same sex sex instead of "normal" sex, these people insisted they had no idea.  "I don't know.  I think I was just born this way!"  Think about that:  if they did not make this decision, who (or what) did?  Nobody drew the obvious conclusion.  They didn't know.  Governments didn't know.  Religions didn't know.   But Gaia knew.

Cities.

Nine hundred years ago we were clearly nearing the end of big city madness.  For centuries the accepted pattern, world wide, had been for people to gather in large numbers in small spaces.  Crowded conditions were regarded as normal, irrespective of the obvious hazards to physical  and emotional well being.  The steady increase in homosexuality was universally viewed as a sign of societal decay caused by the stress of deteriorating living conditions.  By 2100 the burden of providing food, water and sanitation for the millions living in cities was overwhelming.  As resources dwindled, these monstrous constructs began to rot from the inside out.  They were revealed for what they had always been: a sign of irrationality and sickness, pustules on the human landscape.  Too many people shared a common water supply.  Ancient sewage systems began crumbling.  Illness increased dramatically.   Supply infrastructures became more finely tuned and unstable.  The scene was primed for disaster. The only question was precisely what disaster.   The denouement, however,  came not from within, but from outside the system.  An alien invasion.

Visitors.

Perhaps it was the Perseids of 2104.  This was never proven, but the timing was about right.  By the Spring of 2105, in large cities all over the planet, people began dying from a new, mysterious disease.  The symptoms indicated a deterioration of the nervous system, but tests revealed no apparent  cause.  It was highly contagious -- cities were an ideal breeding ground.  Eventually the culprit was spotted:  a motile entity that was lifelike, yet not quite like our life.  But close enough -- close enough.  The old fear that earth might be invaded by creatures from outer space turned out to  be true -- but not in the colorful way once imagined.  The question about whether there was life elsewhere was answered in the most dramatic fashion.  It arrived quietly and we had no defenses.    During the next two hundred years world  population dropped by 90 percent.

Part Five.

Darkest Age.

From the outset it was clear that some people got only a mild form of the new plague and survived.  No one knew why.  By 2410 the population stopped shrinking -- the remaining people were immune.  The race survived -- was given another chance.   The population, by necessity, adapted to a largely agrarian life style.  Universally, cities remained abandoned and fell into decay.  Farming communities, once regarded as far rural, became the primary living areas.  People wanted to live near their food sources. Cities, huge skeletal piles, were mined for valuable resources.  The flow was reversed:  what had been transferred into cities for centuries now gradually moved back out into the sparsely settled farmlands.  The ancient urge to gather in large centers lost its momentum.  And that momentum,  once lost, was never regained.  No one planned this, it just happened spontaneously all over the world.  No one knew why.  It just seemed to be the obvious, sensible thing to do.

Part Six.

Realization.

The disastrous setback, and the beginning of a new age, brought about the beginning of what was later termed The Realization.  But at the time people just felt they were doing what was obvious.  Their attention was focused on surviving.  The sacredness of human life was universally recognized.  Who could think otherwise?  Resources were to be shared, not hoarded.  Healthcare was everyone's responsibility.  The race achieved a lasting, common-sense morality.  Not through the teachings of priests or rabbis, but emerging from a deep, inner conviction.  Several guiding principles became clear:  population stability, not growth, was the path to survival;  cities were intuitively understood to be destructive -- they were never repopulated; political boundaries -- regions, states, nations -- lost importance; connection to the processes of the earth was all important.  And out of that developed a rapturous sense of wellbeing.

Part Seven.

Balancing Act.

By three hundred years ago it was clear that somehow, through painful necessity, desperation and a reawakened racial morality,  balance was becoming evident.  Population density naturally adjusted to match available supplies.  This was due largely to a gradual shift in our attitude toward sexual pleasure.  For hundreds of years, without much notice, more people had been practicing same-sex sex.  The result was that the birth rate fell dramatically.  As, of course, it had to.  And this situation, at long last, was welcomed as natural and good:  the way it should be.  Finally, widespread bisexuality was understood to be a crucial survival trait.  Gaia had completed her slow racial rescue.

NEOETHERICS
Visualizing Gravitation

by

Jerry Shifman

FOREWORD

We all confront gravitation every moment of our lives, yet nobody can explain how gravitation works.  What is actually going on?  What, exactly, is the mechanism that pushes everything down?  Nobody knows.  And that leaves the door open for a new way of thinking that provides a clear, intuitively satisfying explanation.  Here is where we stand presently.

We say Newton showed that gravitation is caused by the gravitational field surrounding all massive bodies.  WRONG.   Newton said no such thing.   Newton developed empirical equations that accurately describe how objects move in response to gravitation.  But he did not say that a field caused this motion.  In fact he disparaged such thinking.  He felt that  there must be some  agency that made direct mechanical  contact to cause motion.  And he was blunt in saying so:
"It is inconceivable that inanimate brute matter should, without the mediation of something else, which is not material, operate upon and affect other matter without mutual contact.  That gravity should be innate, inherent, and essential to matter, so that one body may act upon another at a distance through a vacuum, without the mediation of anything else, by and through which their action and force may be conveyed from one to another, is to me so great an absurdity that I believe no man, who has in philosophical matters a competent faculty of thinking, can ever fall into it."  I. Newton. [1]

Neoetherics provides this direct mechanical contact that Newton said had to be there.

IN SEARCH OF THE EVIL EMPIRE

When I posted The Dream -- below -- I thought I was creating a new essay. I had presented this, speaking without notes, at my 75th birthday party in September. That post was the first time I had written it down. Or so I thought.

Yesterday Reva was going through some old papers. She came into the room with an odd, quizzical look and handed me two typewritten sheets. "Look what I found," she said.

Here is what I had written twenty-five years ago.

I was utterly amazed.

IN SEARCH OF THE EVIL EMPIRE

The President has referred to the Soviet Union as the Evil Empire. While I regard this as simplistic, it did set me thinking. Is there really an Evil Empire out there somewhere? Where is it? In what way does it threaten us? What should we do about it?

In order to get a handle on this question, it is necessary reach back into our ancient past and look into the process through which the race has emerged from savagery. In the earliest times we survived only through constant vigilance. To be strong, alert and wary were primary survival traits. They were bred into the race. The need to guard the home was a real every-day consideration. Threats from outside, from over the next hill, were always imminent. In this context the inner voice whispered, "Fear the stranger, trust nobody, above all, survive!"

And we survived. We thrived. The necessary skills bred true. Strength, coupled with a fierce drive to persevere, was a remarkably effective combination. And always, always, we fought. Thus did the race grow and prosper for thousands of years.

As time passed, the basic context in which we lived gradually changed. Certainly vigilance and wariness remained useful qualities to have, but fighting became outmoded as other means of settling disputes became more widespread. The tribe living over the next hill became cooperative neighbors, no longer to be feared. But it is as though we have a biological need to distrust and fear someone. So we reached further afield; somewhere out there, beyond "our" domain, still lurked the threat.

Events progressed. Over the millennia one can see three factors falling into place:
    1. Our need to find someone to fulfill the role of alien threat drives us to look to the most distant lands.
    2. Our technological ability to do harm steadily increases.
    3. The rational basis for our fear and hatred grows less convincing.
At some point it became apparent to advanced thinkers that our most ancient atavistic urges were no longer working to our advantage. The great teaching, "Love thy neighbor. Be trustful." was preached by many teachers, in many lands. This marked the point in history when we first began to appreciate our fundamental problem. The real Evil Empire had been glimpsed. For the past few thousand years we have seen the three trends gradually sharpen and focus into our current crux.

1. The focus of our fear and hatred is now
on the most distant and inaccessible of
lands.

2. Our ability to do harm has become total
-- we could easily destroy all of civilization
3. A rational basis for our savage urges no
longer exists.

The grand question before the world is whether "good" will triumph over "evil." On the side of good we have love, trust and brotherhood. Evil is represented by fear, distrust and hatred. The central thrust of religions worldwide is to promote the former characteristics. Working against that effort is all the weight of our inborn savagery. Deep down we feel that we must fight to win our security. And now, unless we see past that anachronistic compulsion, we may very well all die in a final spasm of violence -- the ultimate capitulation to our darkest drives.

Faced with this prospect, what should we now regard as the Evil Empire? The villain is not "out there," it is within each of us. Whenever we think, "It would be nice to disarm, but we can't trust Them," we reveal our ancient problem. To state it most simply, the Evil Empire, truly, is the need to believe in an Evil Empire. And while our President remains firmly in the thrall of this atavistic compulsion, then we are all in the hands of the Evil Empire. The Evil Empire dwells in the heart of Ronald Reagan, and in the heart of everyone for whom suspicion, distrust and fear seem more reasonable than trust, love and brotherhood.

THE DREAM

"You may say that I'm a dreamer,

But I'm not the only one."

The problem we face is as old as the race: suspicion, fear and a need to fight. At the outset all these are survival traits. Here in our cave we are safe. This is our family, our tribe. We trust each other. But out there, beyond our fire place, are the others. We must guard against them. We must be vigilant. We must keep them away from our hunting grounds. We must fight, and kill if necessary, to protect our family. This is how we remain secure.

Gradually, painfully slowly, we realize that our closest neighbors can, sometimes, be trusted. Cooperation, carefully managed, can be useful. But only within our village. Distrust and fear of strangers remains the rule.

Truly, we have an inborn need to hate. Deep down we crave an excuse to fight. This proves our value to the tribe. With time it becomes necessary to look further afield to find enemies that threaten us. The next village perhaps. Or if they prove benign, the next state -- the next country.

Governments have always understood this. Give the people someone to hate. Provide an outlet for their desire to kill. They will follow you. It has never failed. This inborn malevolent scourge continually extends its reach. Hatred spreads to the most distant lands, finally engulfing the entire earth. One day we look over our shoulder and see an angry mob cresting the hill behind us, snarling, fists raised. Advancing toward us they have found the ultimate enemy: the poisonous nature dwelling in each of us. We have doomed ourselves.

This is our ugly, self-inflicted purgatory. It is overwhelming in scope. How can we possibly hope to fix an entire sick world? It seems hopeless. Clearly this primitive mindset is no longer needed. Why can't we get beyond this? What is one to do?

I have this dream.

In the dream the change begins with a small group -- one enlightened tribe. This cadre makes a pact: treat everyone with trust and respect. Just that. Fear and suspicion are the enemy. Every encounter is an opportunity. Consciously seize it. Make it an example. Here, right now, in this moment is your chance. You must not fail. Trust and respect. Trust and respect. Always. It's worth a try.

In the dream this behavior is contagious.

I understand.

An angelic infection spreading outward.

Let me help you with that.

It becomes epidemic.

Don't be concerned, I know you didn't mean it.

A pervasive plague of peace.

Come to my home for a meal.

A beatific blossoming outward.

Here, take my hand.

Beyond cities, beyond states, beyond national boundaries.

We have no problem here.

To the farthest reaches.

I believe you. I trust you.

In the dream each of us is just six degrees of association from everyone. The world changes. One day we look over our shoulder and again see the crowd cresting the hill behind us. But this time they are smiling, This time their arms are open to us.

In the dream we find our true selves at last.

It's worth a try.

Inauguration

Hello, world.

Just getting started here. Now I've got to figure out how to drive this thing!
